That number has dramatically increased over the past decade and in particular the last few years.<\/p>\n<p>A February study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found an<strong> &#8220;unprecedented level of hopelessness&#8221; and suicidal thoughts <\/strong>among the nation&#8217;s youth. This cannot stand.<a href=\"https:\/\/peacealliance.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/youth-mental-health.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-14304 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/peacealliance.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/youth-mental-health.jpg\" alt=\"Youth mental health\" width=\"263\" height=\"328\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peacealliance.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/youth-mental-health.jpg 642w, https:\/\/peacealliance.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/youth-mental-health-336x419.jpg 336w, https:\/\/peacealliance.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/youth-mental-health-128x160.jpg 128w, https:\/\/peacealliance.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/youth-mental-health-566x705.jpg 566w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 263px) 100vw, 263px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">TAKE ACTION NOW:<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/peacealliance.salsalabs.org\/youthmentalhealthcrisis0\/index.html\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow\">Click here to contact your state and federal elected officials today, urging them to provide more emergency and preventive mental health funding and support.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This past week three influential groups, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Emergency Physicians, and the Emergency Nurses Association released a joint statement pleading for more support and resources as the number of children and teenagers with mental health concerns are overwhelming emergency departments nationwide.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The joint policy statement recommended several courses of action:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Develop community-based teams that can respond to pediatric mental health crises in schools, doctors&#8217; offices, and homes.<\/li>\n<li>Add pediatric mental health professionals to emergency departments.<\/li>\n<li>Support emergency department staff with information specific to groups at high risk for mental health concerns: victims of abuse, post-traumatic stress, depression, and LGBTQ youth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We at The Peace Alliance have been concerned about these trends and continue to advocate for even broader mental health support policies through our peacebuilding cornerstones and <a href=\"https:\/\/peacealliance.org\/issues-advocacy\/blueprint-for-peace\/\">Blueprint for Peace<\/a>.
