The Violence Containment Industry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/buildingpeaceforum.com\/2013\/04\/the-price-of-violence\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow\">Research<\/a> from the Institute for Economics and Peace shows that as recently as 2010, the <b>Violence Containment Industry accounted for $2.16 trillion, or around 15 percent of U.S. GDP.<\/b> Violence containment spending encompasses local, state, and federal government expenditure as well as private spending by corporations, households, and individuals.<a href=\"http:\/\/org.salsalabs.com\/o\/696\/p\/dia\/action3\/common\/public\/?action_KEY=17810\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-4344\" src=\"https:\/\/peacealliance.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/BtM-Tall-5-Cornerstones-.png\" alt=\"BtM-Tall-5-Cornerstones-\" width=\"250\" height=\"277\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When adding up the concrete costs to the average American taxpayer it is estimated that violence containment spending costs<b> $7,000 for every man, woman and child each year.<\/b> That is<b> $6 billion a day <\/b>in total<b>, <\/b>or<b> $246 million an hour<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p><b>AND YET, we spend a tiny fraction of that on peacebuilding work<\/b>, which in comparison, proves to be cost effective, saves lives and builds lasting community resilience.<\/p>\n<h1><a href=\"http:\/\/org.salsalabs.com\/o\/696\/p\/dia\/action3\/common\/public\/?action_KEY=17810\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow\"><b>Sign our petition today, telling Congress and the President that it&#8217;s time to invest in key Peacebuilding Cornerstones. &gt;&gt;<\/b><\/a><b> <\/b><\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li>If violence containment spending were represented as a discrete industry, it would be the <b>largest industry in the U.S. economy<\/b>\u2014larger than construction, real estate, professional services, or manufacturing.<\/li>\n<li>If violence containment spending were represented as a discrete national economic entity, it would be the <b>seventh largest economy in the world<\/b>, only slightly smaller than the UK economy.<\/li>\n<li>Violence containment spending is <b>four times higher than the national defense budget<\/b>.<\/li>\n<li>Public sector spending on <b>Violence Containment Industry<\/b> accounts for 10.8 percent of GDP while private sector spending is 4.2 percent of GDP.<\/li>\n<li>If U.S. federal violence containment spending was reduced by 5 percent each year for five years, the <b>$326 billion of saved funds would be sufficient to entirely update the energy grid, rebuild all levies, and renew the nation\u2019s school infrastructure.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Growing breakthroughs within the following five key Peacebuilding Cornerstones offer great hope, demonstrate proven effectiveness and are ready to <b>forge bold and comprehensive national policies<\/b>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Empowering Community Peacebuilding<br \/> <\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Teaching Peace in Schools<\/b><b><br \/> <\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Humanizing Justice Systems<br \/> <\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Cultivating Personal Peace<\/b><b><br \/> <\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Fostering International Peace<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Let&#8217;s tell our elected officials that it&#8217;s time for a change.\u00a0 We can&#8217;t keep investing such a tremendous amount of resources trying to contain violence.\u00a0 It&#8217;s time we put our collective attention and resources on dismantling the root causes of violence, by investing in the prevention and intervention work of peacebuilding.<\/p>\n<h1><a href=\"http:\/\/org.salsalabs.com\/o\/696\/p\/dia\/action3\/common\/public\/?action_KEY=17810\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow\">We can do this!
