{"id":7498,"date":"2018-11-18T14:04:09","date_gmt":"2018-11-18T19:04:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peacealliance.org\/?p=7498"},"modified":"2018-11-18T14:04:09","modified_gmt":"2018-11-18T19:04:09","slug":"advocating-for-peacebuilding-in-dc-and-beyond","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/peacealliance.org\/advocating-for-peacebuilding-in-dc-and-beyond\/","title":{"rendered":"Advocating for Peacebuilding in DC and Beyond"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><em><strong>One student wrote to Congress that she hopes for a world <br \/>\nwhere we don&#8217;t have to fear and worry about how to hide students during a mass shooting.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Another said he hopes we can one day be a country <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">where no one is a victim of domestic violence.<\/span> <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>From letters by San Diego students delivered to Congress during Advocacy Days 2018<\/strong><\/span><\/span><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>During the week of International Day of Peace (9\/21\/18), Department of Peacebuilding (DoP\/ HR 1111) advocates traveled to Washington, D.C. to <strong>make peacebuilding a national priority<\/strong> and to <strong>seek additional cosponsors for current DoP legislation<\/strong>.\u00a0 We also urged support for the DoP Act of 2019, which will be introduced likely in February 2019.\u00a0 We relayed messages of peacebuilding from students in CA and Washington, D.C.\u00a0 (See <a href=\"https:\/\/peacealliance.kontribune.com\/articles\/8720\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Someday.\u00a0 With Liberty &amp; Justice for All &#8211; DC Advocacy Days, Part I<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/peacealliance.kontribune.com\/articles\/8719\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Then We Met Congress &#8211; DC Advocacy Days, Part II<\/em><\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Against the backdrop of contentious hearings on the confirmation of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, DoP advocates visited legislators to promote multiple peace-related bills, delivered constituent letters, worked with others in the field to AMPLIFY requests for DoP cosponsors, followed up after Advocacy Days, and coordinated with other International Day of Peace actions: <\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Legislative Visits<\/strong><\/span><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Visited over 140 legislative offices<\/strong>, including at least 121 House visits and 19 Senate visits<\/li>\n<li><strong>Conducted 24 scheduled meetings<\/strong>, two of which included constituent participation via phone (Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA) and Rep. Jimmy Panetta (D-CA))<\/li>\n<li><strong>Met informally with the offices of numerous legislators<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Visited the offices of 43 current DoP cospoonsors and sponsor Rep. Barbara Lee<\/strong> (D-CA) to thank them for current co-sponsorship and to urge them to sign on when the bill is introduced in 2019<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Letters<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Delivered over 80 handwriteen heartfelt constituent letters<\/strong> from CA (Monterey), New Mexico, a Texas educator and San Diego, CA (71 high school students, 8 adult community leaders)\u00a0 (See<a href=\"https:\/\/peacealliance.kontribune.com\/articles\/8715\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em> Delivering Hope for a World Where Students Don\u2019t Have to Worry About Where to Hide During a Mass Shooting<\/em><\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>AMPLIFY Support<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Spread the word about H.R. 1111 through <strong>distribution of AMPLIFY flyers<\/strong> in CA, NC, Toronto, Canada and online<\/li>\n<li>Many made <strong>AMPLIFY contacts <\/strong>with legislators by participants in CA, MT, ND, NM and elsewhere<\/li>\n<li>Peace Alliance&#8217;s <strong>online petitions<\/strong> garnered additional contacts with members of Congress<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Follow-up<\/strong><\/span><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Followed up after DC Advocacy Days <\/strong>legislative visits with phone calls and emails to almost all offices where we had meetings and with other &#8216;drop-by&#8217; offices\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Ten Advocacy Days Bills<\/strong> <\/span><\/h4>\n<p>During Advocacy Days, we sought cosponsors for 10 peace-related bills: <strong>Department of Peacebuilding Act<\/strong> of 2017 (H.R. 1111); legislation relating to <strong>Assault Weapons Ban<\/strong> (H.R. 5077, S. 2095); <strong>Condemning Violence Against Children Globally<\/strong> (H.R. 5087); Establishing the\u00a0 <strong>Select Committee on Gun Violence Prevention<\/strong> (H.Res. 367); <strong>No Money Bail<\/strong> Act of 2017 (H.R. 1437); <strong>Violence Against Women Requthorization Act<\/strong> of 2018 (H.R. 6545); <strong>Department of State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs Appropriation Act<\/strong> (S. 1780); <strong>REUNITE Act <\/strong>(S. 3227); and <strong>Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act<\/strong> (S. 1917).\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">From 09\/01\/18<\/span><\/strong> &#8212; when we started publicizing Advocacy Days legislation recommendations &#8212; <strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">through 11\/02\/18 follow-up<\/span><\/strong>, <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>64 cosponsors added their names to our recommended bills, including at least 34 from our visit list<\/strong>.\u00a0 <strong>Rep. Yvette Clarke (D-NY) and Rep. Marcia Fudge (D-OH) cospoonsored H.R. 1111<\/strong><\/span> during this period.\u00a0 The largest increase was in cosponsors of Condemning Violence Against Children Globally and the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act.\u00a0 Regarding several other bills, many on our visit list were already cosponsors.<\/p>\n<p><u><\/u><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>International Day of Peace<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nIn addition to congressional visits, we participated in:\u00a0<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>L<\/strong><strong>ocal activities<\/strong> such as San Diego&#8217;s International Day of Peace\/ &#8220;Give Peace a Chance&#8221; gathering of middle and high school students at Millenial Tech Middle School<\/li>\n<li><strong>State activities <\/strong>such as CA Vision 2020 in Sacramento<\/li>\n<li><strong>National activities<\/strong> such as Pace e Bene&#8217;s Nonviolence Convergence in Washington, D.C. (with affiliated activities throughout the nation), where we carried the DoP banner in a silent march from the Martin Luther King, Jr. Monument to the White House<\/li>\n<li><strong>International activities<\/strong> such as World Beyon War&#8217;s conference &#8216;Degigning a World Beyond War: Legalizing Peace,&#8217; where the US Department of Peacebuilding co-presented a panel with Canada&#8217;s peace Initiative on <strong>&#8216;Departments and Other Infrastructures for Peace &#8212; A Way Forward&#8217;<\/strong>.\u00a0 (See<a href=\"https:\/\/peacealliance.kontribune.com\/articles\/8708\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em> 2018 \u2018World Beyond War\u2019 Toronto Conference Included Departments &amp; Infrastructures for Peace (I4P) Workshop<\/em><\/a>.) Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA) wrote a welcoming letter to attendees in which she said the culture of violence we live in is unacceptable.\u00a0 (See <a href=\"https:\/\/peacealliance.kontribune.com\/articles\/8714\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Rep.
