Andy Kim (NJ-3) and Rep. Nydia Velazquez (NY-7) cosponsored<\/b> HR 1111 during Advocacy Days. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"DoP\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Some meetings also included constituents via conference call. Our message of peacebuilding was AMPLIFIED by <b>callers<\/b> from multiple states and by <b>letters<\/b> from San Diego (CA) students, a county supervisor and others<b>. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We went to the offices of<b> current and former DoP cosponsors, most newly-elected Democratic Congressmembers<\/b>, Representatives for whom we are constituents, and others.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>We met with the office of<b> DoP sponsor Rep. Barbara Lee<\/b> (D-CA-13).<\/li>\n<li>We also met with <b>many other offices<\/b> including Rep. Alma Adams (D-NC-12), Rep. Donald Beyer (D-VA-8), Rep. Brendan Boyle (D-PA-2),<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Rep. Mark DeSaulnier (D-CA-11),<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Sen. Richard Durbin (IL), Rep. Bill Foster (IL-11), Rep. Chuy Garcia (D-IL-4), Rep. Morgan Griffith (R-VA-9), Kendra Horn (D-OK-5), Rep. Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA-6), ), Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX-30), Rep. Robin Kelly (D-IL-2), Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA-17), ), Rep. Andy Kim\u00a0(D- NJ-3), Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick (AZ-02), Rep. Conor Lamb (D-PA-17), <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Rep. Nydia Velazquez (D-NY-7) and others.<\/li>\n<li>We visited <b>offices representing most states<\/b>. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>We <b>met with several members of Congress<\/b>, including Susan Davis (CA), Rep. Al Green (TX), Eddie Bernice Johnson (TX), Ro Khanna (CA), and Rep. Mike Levin (CA).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Rep.Morgan Griffith (VA-9) met with our group.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a name=\"DC\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In addition to visits to the offices of legislators and a week which resulted in the official commencement of presidential impeachment investigations, we participated in various D.C. events, including: <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A visit to D.C.\u2019s Lafayette pre-K through 5<sup>th<\/sup> grade school, where nearly 900 students attend <b>weekly peace classes<\/b><\/li>\n<li>A personal tour of the Smithsonian exhibit \u201c<b>Illegal to Be You: Gay History Beyond Stonewall<\/b>\u201d commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Participation in International Day of Peace\/ <b>We the People March<\/b><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>A\u00a0<b>lecture by Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor<\/b> urging children to be themselves and to \u201cJust Ask\u201d when they have questions<\/li>\n<li>Attending a rally to <b>#endgunviolence<\/b><\/li>\n<li>A visit to the National <b>Museum of the American Indian<\/b><\/li>\n<li>Attending a House committee meeting where members discussed <b>possible violations of the<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Constitutional Emoluments Clause<\/b> which prohibits federal office holders from accepting any gift, payment or other thing of value from a foreign state or its representatives<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i>As a follow-up, we ask you to call 11 former HR 1111 cosponsors who have not yet signed on to the current bill.<\/i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Please do this during 2019 and into 2020.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This is a way to honor veterans who are working to Reclaim Armistice Day (11\/11) for peace, rather than for the glorification of war.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><b>We need your help gaining cosponsors of HR 1111<\/b> &#8212; call your member of Congress and those listed here at<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/peacealliance.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/FLYER-ReclaimArmisticeDayFlyer-2019.pdf\">Reclaim Armistice Day for Peace Action<\/a><\/p>\n<p>For more information about Advocacy Days, see:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/peacealliance.kontribune.com\/articles\/9286\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow\"><b>I. Advocacy Days: More Photos<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Building Bridges for Peace,<br \/>\n<b>Nancy Merritt<br \/>\n<\/b><i>Department of Peacebuilding Council Lead<br \/>\n<\/i><b><i>On behalf of the National Department of Peacebuilding Campaign<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #0000ff;\"><strong>The Importance of a 60-Second Elevator Speech!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>While attending the California Democratic Party Convention in Long Beach, CA, with the CA Peace Alliance Campaign for a Department of Peacebuildng, <strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">I ended up in the elevator face-to-face with<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders<\/span><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">, his wife Jane, and campaign staff.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/strong>He had spoken at the Univision televised forum and was on his way to speak to the Caucuses.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"Bernie\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">I shook his hand and immediately started talking.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/strong>I reminded him that he was a co-sponsor of<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>H.R. 1111, the legislation to create a cabinet level US Department of Peacebuilding when he was in the House, and we needed him to do the same in the Senate or find another Senator to introduce a Senate companion bill. <strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">I also stated that we need him to put Peace in his platform while running for President.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">I thanked him for all he has done to promote peace.<\/span><\/strong> When the elevator door opened &#8211; it was only one floor &#8211; it ended the conversation. <strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Jane Sanders mentioned how impressed she was.<\/span><\/strong> You just never know who you&#8217;re going to run into when or where.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">I was so glad I was prepared to seize the moment.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><b>Call Your Senators and Urge Them to<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><b>Support S. 2843, the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2019!<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>This is the advocate\u2019s bill, informed and inspired by the needs of victims and survivors of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking<\/b>. The Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2019 reauthorizes VAWA grant programs and makes modest, yet vital, enhancements to existing law.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"S2843\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>S. 2843:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Invests in prevention;<\/li>\n<li>Ends impunity for non-Native perpetrators of sexual assault, child abuse co-occurring with domestic violence, stalking, sex trafficking, and assaults on tribal law enforcement officers on tribal lands;<\/li>\n<li>Improves enforcement of court orders that require adjudicated domestic abusers to relinquish their firearms;<\/li>\n<li>Improves access to housing for victims and survivors;<\/li>\n<li>Protects victims of dating violence from firearm homicide;<\/li>\n<li>Helps survivors gain and maintain economic independence;<\/li>\n<li>Updates the federal definition of domestic violence for the purposes of VAWA grants only to acknowledge the full range of abuse victims suffer (does not impact the criminal definition of domestic violence);<\/li>\n<li>Maintains existing protections for all survivors; and<\/li>\n<li>Improves the healthcare system\u2019s response to domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, and stalking.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Shared by<b> Jerilyn Stapleton,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span><\/b><i>Legislative Lead<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #0000ff;\"><b>Rotary Peace Fellows Around the Globe<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">As a Rotary Peace Fellow,<\/span><\/strong> I can assure you that you will never feel alone in your efforts to build Peace, wherever you are in this world. Peacebuilding is happening 24\/7 &#8212; somewhere with someone you were fortunate enough to spend 3 intensive months or 2 years<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>with, engaged in studying peace and learning across cultures to practice conflict resolution skills, in and out of the classroom.<a href=\"https:\/\/peacealliance.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Rotary-peace.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8563 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/peacealliance.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Rotary-peace.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"238\" height=\"130\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peacealliance.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Rotary-peace.jpg 238w, https:\/\/peacealliance.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Rotary-peace-160x87.jpg 160w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 238px) 100vw, 238px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rotarianactiongroupforpeace.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/RI-PeaceTimeline2013.pdf\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Rotary Foundation&#8217;s mission<\/a> to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace, was proclaimed in 1917. <strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Rotary&#8217;s goal of worldwide peace and tolerance has been an unwavering pursuit:<\/span><\/strong> conducting global forums, hosting international peace symposiums, advancing peace through its 60-year collaboration with the UN, as well as grassroots initiatives such as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rotarianactiongroupforpeace.org\/projects\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow\">Rotarian Action Group for Peace<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"Rotary\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;Rotary&#8217;s most significant effort to wage peace is the <a href=\"https:\/\/my.rotary.org\/en\/myrotary\/en\/take-action\/empower-leaders\/support-peace-centers\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow\">Rotary Peace Centers<\/a> program, established in 2002. Each year, the program trains some of the world&#8217;s most dedicated and brightest professionals, preparing them to promote national and international cooperation and to resolve conflict. They include graduates of a two-year master&#8217;s degree program and a three-month professional certificate program at Rotary&#8217;s partner universities.\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rotary.org\/en\/rotary-peace-centers-shape-hundreds-careers-peace-and-conflict-resolution\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow\"><i>Rotary Peace Centers shape hundreds of careers in peace and conflict resolution<\/i><\/a><i>)<\/i><\/p>\n<p>My course of study in Peacebuilding was at the Rotary Center for Peace in Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand from January through March 2015.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Twenty-two fellow Fellows from 14 different countries were selected for this Rotary-funded professional development course. As the Executive Director of a Full Circle Restorative Justice (FCRJ), a small non profit (NGO) located in Salida, Colorado, my career aspirations opened up to include international peacebuilding perspectives and opportunities, as well as networking globally.<\/p>\n<p>Since my transformative time in Thailand, I have presented on Restorative Justice at the Women&#8217;s Economic Forums (WEF) in India in 2016 and Portugal in 2019. One of my Peace Sisters, Wendy Coulson Catalan and I collaborated on a Nonviolent Communication Workshop in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. <strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">In the spirit of \u201cgiving back\u201d to Rotary,<\/span> <\/strong>I&#8217;ve spoken at numerous clubs in the United States and Mexico, and <strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">most recently in October 2019<\/span><\/strong>, at the Rotary 5470 District Conference in Colorado. It was an honor to share with the assembled Rotarians on how the dollars they donated make a difference on the ground in peace work locally \u2013 and internationally.<\/p>\n<p>Directly linked to Rotary was the writing of and recent publishing of my book <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><i>Paws 4 Peace: Enhancing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B07QZM77DY\/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&amp;btkr=1\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-8565 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/peacealliance.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/book-cover.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"158\" height=\"242\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peacealliance.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/book-cover.jpg 209w, https:\/\/peacealliance.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/book-cover-105x160.jpg 105w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 158px) 100vw, 158px\" \/><\/a>Restorative Practices with Therapy Dogs. <\/i><\/span><\/strong>It presents a pioneering approach to a cross collaboration of the species in restoring relationships and building peace. This missive details the beauty of the Human-Animal Bond in action \u2013 therapy dog teams working to hold offenders accountable and to provide a voice and healing to victims \u2013 within a Paws 4 Peace<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>restorative justice program. color: #0000ff;\"><b>California Democratic Party Endorses <br \/>\nTwo CA DoP Campaign Bills at June 2019 Convention<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The CA Democratic Party (<b>CDP) endorsed federal legislation to create a Department of Peacebuilding<\/b> (HR 1111\/ DoP) and <b>CA legislation to create an Office of Healthy and Safe Communities<\/b> (AB 656\/ OHSC) at its statewide convention in San Francisco from 5\/31 &#8211;
