Pick Your Pie and Contact Congress\"\"<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

For many years, we have celebrated Mother’s Day, which was originally a day calling for peace, by taking pies to the local offices of our members of Congress and other legislators.\u00a0 Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, we are reimagining Mother’s Day and our summer 2020 advocacy <\/b>for legislators to sign on as cosponsors of the Department of Peacebuilding (DoP\/ HR 1111) legislation.\u00a0 Starting now and continuing through August, we ask you to take the actions listed below.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

THIS MOTHER’S DAY<\/u>
\nWhat is different<\/u> <\/b>about this Mother’s Day is that we currently cannot physically deliver pies or visit either the local or the DC offices of our legislators.\u00a0 We ask YOU <\/b>to select your favorite pie virtually and<\/u> to contact Congress online.\u00a0<\/p>\n

What is not different<\/u> <\/b>is that we are still calling for prevention of war and other types of \"\"<\/a>violence.\u00a0 We are still saying\u00a0that peace can and must be a national priority.\u00a0 We are still saying that PEACE WANTS A PIECE OF THE FEDERAL BUDGET PIE <\/b><\/span>to prevent violence.\u00a0 We need a Department of Peacebuilding to promote compassionate and nonviolent policy decisions as an ongoing part of the structure and fabric of this nation, including as we weave our way through all implications and impacts of such crises as COVID-19 and the climate meltdown.<\/p>\n

In her Mother’s Day Proclamation of 1870,<\/b> Julia Ward Howe decried the savagery of war, the waste of lives and the toll on humanity.\u00a0 She called for disarming<\/b> and promoted “the alliance of the different nationalities, the amicable settlement of international questions, the great and general interests of peace.”\u00a0 On March 23, 2020, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres called for an immediate global ceasefire<\/b>.\u00a0 He linked the current coronavirus health crisis and the need for peace.\u00a0 “It is time to put armed conflict on lockdown and focus together on the true fight of our lives … to silence the guns, we must raise the voices for peace<\/b>.”<\/span><\/p>\n

MOTHER’S DAY & SUMMER ACTIONS<\/b><\/u>
\nThe Department of Peacebuilding legislation was introduced by Rep. Barbara Lee (CA-13) and currently has 36 cosponsors.\u00a0 By spending a tiny fraction of our federal budget on a DOP, peacebuilding and violence prevention, we will save lives and money and vastly improve the quality of life for millions.<\/b><\/span>\u00a0 Participate in the Mother’s Day call for peace.\u00a0 <\/span><\/b>Please take any or all of these actions:<\/b><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n
